The University Heights Academy Lady Blazers took advantage of fielding miscues to build a big lead and then held off a late rally from the Fort Campbell Lady Falcons Wednesday evening to take an 11-7 8th District win in Hopkinsville. The Lady Falcons were their own worst enemy at times, being charged with eight errors in the contest.
The Lady Blazers took the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs off two errors and three walks to go up 3-0 . After the Lady Falcons plated a run in the top of the fourth, three walks, a hit batter, and another error allowed the Lady Blazers to extend the lead to 6-1.
Two more Fort Campbell errors opened the door for two more runs in the fifth, running the lead out to 8-1. After the Lady Falcons got one run in the top of the sixth, UHA blew the game open in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three more runs to make it 11-2. The big hit in the inning was a two-run single from Lillian Bruce.
Led by doubles from Alexsa Hoffman, Kiley McCrary, and Emma Kolmerton, Fort Campbell came up with a five-run rally in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough to overcome the lead the Lady Blazers had built up.
The big story of the game was the ‘free’ opportunities afforded University Heights. The Lady Blazers were the beneficiaries for eight Lady Falcon errors, nine walks, and three hit batters.
