A quick start for the Graves County Eagles was too much for the Lyon County Lyons to overcome Saturday as the Eagles picked up a 6-2 win in Mayfield, ending the Lyons’ 8-game winning streak. The road trip was a last-minute addition to the schedule Saturday after the Lyons’ home game against Henderson County was canceled due to wet field conditions.
Lyon County missed an opportunity to take the lead early when John Bingham was left stranded on third base in the first inning after a one-out triple.
Graves County made the Lyons pay for not converting the opportunity in the bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back doubles with two outs drove in three runs for the Eagles as they took a 3-0 lead afternoon. That would be a lead they would not give up.
Lyon County got on the board in the top of the fifth. Drew Richie singled and Austin Spears doubled to give the Lyons runners at second and third. One out later, Eli Baker drove both of them home with a double to center, cutting the lead to 3-2.
But Graves County responded in the bottom of the fifth to turn back the hopes of a Lyon County comeback. The Eagles scored three runs with two outs to push the lead out to 6-2. Graves then sat down six of the next seven Lyon County batters to come to the plate and secure the win.
Drew Richie was 2-3, while Austin Spears was 2-4 with a double. Eli Baker was 1-3 with a double and two RBIs.
John Bingham was tagged with the loss for the Lyons. He went five innings, giving up six runs, just four of them earned, on seven hits, striking out six and walking two.
The loss drops the Lyons to 15-6 on the year. They travel to Livingston Central Monday for a 5th District contest.
