With three more home runs Monday, Lyon County High School remained among the state leaders in baseball team bombs during a commanding 12-5 road win over Livingston Central. Brady Belt and Eli Baker each hit two-run shots, and Austin Spears added a solo HR in the sixth, giving the Lyons 14 homers this season — fifth most of any team in KHSAA.

The Lyons took control early when Peyton Williams delivered one of 10 Lyon County hits — an RBI single — to plate Spears and put the purple and gold-clad squad up 1-0. And after Aiden Waters singled to start the second, Belt blasted his first homer of the year to give Lyon County a 3-0 advantage.

Livingston, which had seven defensive errors in the loss, took advantage of a Lyon error in the bottom of the second, scoring twice when Zion Meyers’ sharp ground ball led to a miscue that pulled the Cardinals within 3-2. Answering right back, however, the Lyons turned the long ball again to start the third inning, as Baker lined his team-leading fifth HR to left field to put the Cards back in a 5-2 hole.

Coming into the game after defeating Mayfield 8-0 on April 28, Livingston Central continued to fight back. The Cardinals pulled within 6-4 when Meyers scored on a passed ball in the fourth, and cut the Lyon lead to 8-5 when Peytton Martin grounded into a run-scoring double play, but that would be as close as they’d get.

In addition to the home runs, Belt, Baker and Spears combined for seven RBI, six runs scored, two walks and two stolen bases. Waters finished 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI and Drew Richie (2-for-4) struck out seven in four innings of relief. Belt (5-1) pitched the first two innings and won for the fifth time in seven starts in 2023.

Luke Vinson (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year, allowing eight hits, three walks and six earned runs in six innings. He also fanned seven. The Cardinals (5-13) were led offensively by Drew Hosick (2-for-3, two runs, two doubles) and Daniel Ramage (1-for-2, run, double, stolen base).

Lyon County (16-6) continues to have the most wins of any team in the 2nd Region and will attempt to move to 10-1 against regional foes May 4 at Trigg County. The Lyons return home May 9 against Murray High.
