After qualifying for the state tennis tournament Monday, the Caldwell County girls’ doubles pairing of Rachel McClung and Keegan Miller took one more step during Tuesday’s play in the regional tournament in Henderson. McClung and Miller came up just a little short of a regional championship but did make it to the final to claim a runner-up finish.
The pair began the day Tuesday in the semifinals with a matchup against Hopkinsville’s #2 pairing of Ella Brown and Morgan Woosley.
The opening set of the match was a tight battle, with McClung and Miller taking a hard-fought 7-5 win. The duo had the momentum rolling on their side at that point and they cruised to a 6-1 win to close out the match.
Up next was the top seed in the tournament Hopkinsville’s Ella Lester and Allie Fort. Miller and McClung won more games against the Hoptown pair than anyone else, but the region’s dominant pairing was a bit too much to overcome, as they took the championship 6-3, 6-0.
McClung and Miller will now get a couple of weeks to fine-tune their game before heading off to the girls’ state tennis tournament in Lexington.
After the match, YourSportsEdge.Com spoke to the pair about the runner-up finish and getting ready for the state tournament.
