Caldwell County’s Ryan Hammett has reached the championship match of the 2nd Region Tennis Tournament as he looks to defend his singles title from last season.

Hammett, the top seed in this year’s event, defeated No. 3 seed Jaxton Duncan of Henderson County in action Wednesday in Henderson. Hammett fell behind 3-0 in both sets before coming back to post a 6-3, 6-4 triumph.

Hammett will next face second-seeded Mason Bridgeman of Henderson County in the finals. That match is now set for 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Bridgeman played both his quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Wednesday to reach his two-match limit for the day, forcing the championship match to be pushed back to Thursday.

A Hammett win would not just give him the singles title, but would give Caldwell’s guys the team championship for the third straight year.

Hammett rolled through his two matches on Tuesday — winning 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-0 — to advance to Wednesday’s action.

Hammett has already punched his ticket to the KHSAA State Tennis Championships, which will take place May 30-June 1 in Lexington.
