The last two 2nd Region baseball champions, and the two teams that have been at the top of the region RPI standings most of the season, drew into opposite brackets Thursday morning during the 2023 2nd Region tournament draw. The draw was held virtually with coaches and athletic directors of the respective schools.
Christian County, who is the defending champion, and Lyon County, who reached the state final four in 2021, could meet in the regional championship game, but each one will have to navigate some treacherous waters before that could happen next week in Henderson.
The tournament is set to get underway at two locations Saturday, Henderson County High School and Hopkinsville High School.
In the upper half of the bracket, Henderson County (15-17), the champions out of the 6th District, will take on Caldwell County (19-11), the runners-up in the 7th District, Saturday at 7pm at Henderson County. The two teams met in Henderson back on April 5 with Caldwell County picking up a 10-5 win.
The second game in the upper part of the bracket will find Lyon County (20-9), the winners of the 5th District, battling University Heights (15-10), the runners-up in the 8th District, Saturday at 4:30pm at Hopkinsville High School. The Lyons and the Blazers did not meet during the regular season.
In the bottom half of the bracket, Christian County (23-11), champions of the 8th District, will square off against Union County (10-19), the runners-up out of the 6th District, Saturday evening at 7:00 at Hopkinsville High School. The Colonels and the Braves met May 2 at Christian County with the Colonels rolling to an 11-2 win.
The final game of the opening round finds Madisonville-North Hopkins (9-20), the champions in the 7th District, taking on 5th District runner-up Trigg County (11-14), Saturday afternoon at 4:30 at Henderson County High School. The two teams did not meet in the regular season.
The semifinals are set for either Sunday or Monday. If Madisonville wins on Saturday, the semifinals would be Monday in Henderson at 5:30 and 7:30. If Trigg County wins, the semifinals would be Sunday in Henderson at 3pm and 5pm.
The championship game will be in Henderson. If Trigg County wins in the opening round, the game would be Monday at 6pm. If Madisonville wins in the opening round, the game would be Tuesday at 6pm
Tickets for the regional at both locations are $10 and will be available through GoFan.
