Hopkinsville High had a pair of athletes reach the medal podium at Saturday’s Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Class 3A State Track and Field Meet in Lexington.

DeAijah Tullis’ quest to set a new Hopkinsville school record in the high jump before a school consolidation with Christian County takes place will apparently come down to the wire.

The sophomore finished in sixth place in the high jump to earn her first state meet medal.

Tullis topped five feet to reach the medal stand. Her season best is five feet, four inches, which would have tied her for first place Saturday. Tullis is trying to reach Zenae Humphries’ school-best mark of 5 feet, 5 inches set in 1998.

She will have at least one more season to try and better the mark before a proposed combination of Hopkinsville and Christian County High Schools take place.

It was a busy day for Tullis, who qualified for the state meet in four meets and participated in three. She opted out of the 300-meter hurdles because it was scheduled to run at the same time she was attempting to qualify for the finals in the triple jump.

Tullis just missed the finals, finishing 12th with a distance of 33 feet, 6.5 inches. The mark tied her second best.

She also finished 17th in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.28 seconds.

Meanwhile, William Alston placed sixth in the 400-meter run with a time of 50.22 seconds to earn his first state meet medal. His time was a personal best and was the eighth-fastest 400 run in school history.

He also finished 14th in the 200-meter dash in 22.52 seconds – his second-fastest clocking and sixth-best in school history.

Ian Rossario Alicea finished 20th in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.66 seconds, a new personal best for the junior.

The 800-meter relay team of Kristin Johnson, Ian Rossario Alicea, William Alston, and Floyd Kay finished in 15th place in 1:31.10. Their time was the second-fastest in school history, just behind the time of 1:30.39 run by the 2019 relay team at the state meet.

Ian Rossario Alicea, Floyd Kay, Gabe Harton, and William Alston completed the 1600-meter relay in 3:33.84 which was good for 17th place. Alston’s split of 50.011 seconds was the seventh fastest run among the anchor legs in the race.
