I was just getting ready for my daily SLOG — slow jog — on Monday when I turned on the radio. Kentucky Sports Radio was on WHIR (1230 AM) here in Danville and I heard SEC Network/ESPN college football analyst Cole Cubelic was going to join the show.
I always love Cubelic’s insights — and you can get more weekly on the Cube Show Pod — and decided to see what he had to say.
The last time I talked with Cubelic he was raving about Kentucky’s receivers and when he said it was the deepest group he could ever remember at UK, that got my attention.
But what he said Monday on KSR about coach Brad White’s defense at Kentucky certainly got my attention, too.
“In most years, the last five or six years, they haven’t been the most athletic,” Cubelic said. “They haven’t been the fastest, they haven’t been the sleekest, they haven’t been the twitchiest, but it’s just normally been guys that know how to rough you up a little bit.”
Rough you up a little bit is something I know UK defensive line coach Anwar Stewart would like to have said about his players and so would UK head coach Mark Stoops who instills that attitude.
“You wouldn’t want to meet them in the back alley, and I think it could be very similar this year,” Cubelic said about the UK defense.
If he’s right — and Cubelic is normally very accurate in his analysis — then that’s going to be very good news for a Kentucky football team that is confident it can be far better than last year’s team.

The Cats will be a surprise team this year "if" they stay healthy at key positions. Also the offensive line must perform. Stoops has knocked down a lot of doors. I feel like it’s his year to demolish the building. GO CATS!
I was a UK football fan before I was a BB fan so "Rough you up" is something I love to hear about UK’s defense(Smash Mouth is my favorite term for a FB team). We have been a tough defensive team since Stoops got his type of players here. I expect the same this year. Staying healthy and an improved O line will hopefully get me a vacation in Fla.(for a Bowl game) in January. We have already booked rooms in Tampa and Orlando. Yes that is optomistic but we were at the last Citrus Bowl and booked early that year(midway through the season). We booked the same for last year but obviously that didn’t work out! I am excited about the upcoming season!
Thank you Mark Stoops for making UK a "Football School" 🙂
