Kentucky added the highest ranked defensive player in its 2024 recruiting class Saturday when Tennessee prep star Elijah Groves verbally committed to the Wildcats over North Carolina State and Purdue, his other finalists.
He’s the No. 370 overall player and the No. 30 linebacker in the country in his class in the 247Sports Composite rankings. He’s ranked amongst the top 10 players in Tennessee.
The 6-4, 210-pound Groves is a four-star linebacker who had 15 Division 1 offers, including Virginia Tech and Memphis.
He played at linebacker and in the secondary his junior year for East Robertson High School when it went 11-2 and reached the Tennessee Class 2A quarterfinals. He had 59 tackles, four tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions. He also played receiver and had four touchdown catches and 209 yards in receptions.
He’s a versatile athlete who averaged 19.2 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in basketball and in track has run the 100-meter dash in 11.84 seconds and 200 dash in 23.90. He has also cleared 5-8 in the high jump. He also has a 6-9 wingspan.
Groves’ cousin, Taylor, is a safety at Mississippi.
I reached out to Groves at the number listed on his Twitter account where he made his commitment announcement about a feature story and the reply I got back via text was “he ain’t interested” in doing a story.
