Trigg County’s 2023 football schedule features some new faces, familiar rivals, and a new-look district.

The Wildcats open the season on Saturday, August 19 against Murray. The game is part of a two-game bowl night to open the season that also features Calloway County and Harrison County in the opener.

Trigg snapped a five-game losing streak to Murray last year with a 35-34 win at Perdue Field. The Tigers finished 6-6 and lost to Mayfield in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs.

Trigg County will play at Barren County on Friday, August 25, marking the first-ever meeting between the schools. It will be the first of two straight games on turf for the Wildcats. Barren County, a Class 6A school, was 4-7 last year and lost to Henderson County 48-0 in the first round of the playoffs.

On Friday, September 1, Trigg County will play at Fort Campbell. Trigg won last year’s game 49-6 and five straight against the Falcons, who were 4-7 last year and lost to Owensboro Catholic in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.

On Sept. 8, Trigg County will host Russellville for the first time in six years. Last year, the Panthers struggled through a 1-10 record one season after playing for the Class 1A state championship.

The series with Russellville dates back to 1938 with the Panthers owning a 42-21-1 advantage over Trigg County.

Trigg County begins play in the new look Class 3A District 1 on Sept. 15 at Webster County. The district now includes McLean County, Hancock County, and Hopkins County Central along with holdovers Webster County and Union County. Paducah Tilghman, who Trigg County never beat since moving up to Class 3A, ascends to Class 4A.

Webster County has a new coach in Edward Milum. Trigg County has won 11 straight games against Webster, including last year’s game 27-20 in Cadiz.

Trigg County will host Hancock County on Sept. 22 at Perdue Field. Hancock was in Trigg County’s Class 2A district in 1999 and 2000 with each team winning once. Their last meeting was in 2014 – a 28-21 Hancock County win at Perdue Field.

On Sept. 29, Trigg County will play the second of three straight home games against Union County. The Braves won their first 12 games of last season before losing to Bardstown 66-33 in the Class 3A quarterfinals.

Union County won last year’s matchup 42-7.

Trigg County will host district newcomer Hopkins County Central for senior night on October 6. Trigg leads the all-time series with the Storm 9-1. Their only loss came in 2008.

Hopkins County Central was 4-7 last year and lost to Warren East in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Trigg County’s bye week comes during its fall break and Ham Festival weekend.

The Wildcats close out district play on Oct. 20 at McLean County. Trigg has won four of the last six meetings between the schools. However, they haven’t won at McLean County since 2000.

McLean County was 9-3 last year and lost to Owensboro Catholic 47-32 in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs.

Trigg County will wrap up the regular season with the annual 139 Bowl at Caldwell County on Oct. 27. Caldwell has won nine straight games since the traveling trophy was created in 2013.

Aaron McClung takes over the head coaching duties at Caldwell after the resignation of Will Barnes. Caldwell was 5-6 last year and lost to McLean County 15-7 in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.

Trigg County’s schedule includes five home games and five road games. Three of its five district games will be at home with the schedule to flip home and away in 2024. A new statewide alignment for the six classes will be drafted for 2025-28.

Trigg County football games will again be broadcast on WKDZ 106.5 FM and online at wkdzradio.com.
