While it is just the first week of the preseason, if Friday’s performance at the ‘Best of the West’ was any indication, the Christian County Colonels will have their moments of excitement during the 2023 football season. The Colonels capped off a solid performance with a tough 29-11 loss to Macon County in the quarterfinal round of the tournament bracket Friday evening.

Christian County began the day Friday taking on Pearl Cohn, the two-time defending ‘Best of the West’ champions. The Colonels’ defense kept them in the game, but the Colonels would end up dropping a close 14-10 decision.

The Colonels’ second game of the morning pool play found them taking on South Warren. Christian County led early, only to see the Spartans battle back and take another close win, this one by a score of 27-22.

Christian County finished the morning taking care of business against new Clarksville school Kirkwood. This time it was the Colonels coming out on top 25-13.

After lunch, the next round of pool play got underway with the Colonels picking up a big win over Paducah Tilghman’s ‘B’ squad. Christian County controlled the game from the beginning and claimed a 34-12 win.

Christian County picked up a forfeit win over Hopkins Central and then matched up with West Creek’s ‘A’ squad. The game was a tight battle, with the Colonels finding a way to take a 14-10 win.

With a 4-2 record in the two rounds of pool play, the Colonels were seeded #8 in the championship bracket, earning them an immediate rematch with West Creek’s ‘A’ squad, who finished as the #9 seed. The rematch was not a battle like the earlier contest. This time, the Christian County offense and defense powered their way to a 33-4 win.

The Colonels then had a quarterfinal round contest against #1 seed Macon County. Christian County battled early and stayed in the contest. The turning point came when the Colonels, trailing by eight, got down inside the ten yard line and came away empty. Macon County then pulled away for a 29-11 win.

The Colonels finished their day with five wins and three losses.
