One thing I always loved about attending Southeastern Conference Media Days — both football and basketball — were the unexpected answers some coaches would give.
Sometimes a coach just gave an answer you had no idea he might give and it could be bizarre and/or funny.
There was a moment like that Tuesday at the SEC Football Media Days with new Auburn coach Hugh Freeze, a former head coach at Ole Miss — and it is an answer that Kentucky coach Mark Stoops might want to consider (ha ha).
Freeze was asked about his ability to make second-half adjustments and what were his keys to making those moves.
Here’s part of his answer:
“That’s not some mystery or — I’m sure other coaches do the same thing. I don’t know. I make my O-line coach change his clothes at halftime if we’re not doing well. I don’t know if that helps, but I do,” Freeze said.
“Matt and Luke started that for me truthfully. We were losing our first game at Ole Miss to a 1-AA opponent and it wasn’t going well. He changed all of his clothes and we rolled up a bunch of numbers the second half, and from that point on, our entire five years together, Matt knew he had to change clothes at halftime if things weren’t going well.”
Freeze said he hadn’t told his new offensive line coach about that tradition but planned to do so.
So maybe UK offensive line coach Zach Yenser better get ready to change clothes at halftime if UK is behind at halftime. Or maybe with Stoops being a defensive minded coach and if the UK is not playing its best, it could be defensive line coach Anwar Stewart making the halftime wardrobe change.
After all, if a team is behind, what could it hurt?
