Former Kentucky all-SEC defensive back Van Hiles spends a lot of time analyzing film and he’s certainly on the bandwagon for Kentucky’s offense being better this season.
He was not a fan of moving Eli Cox from guard to center last season and believes having Cox back at guard along with Kenneth Horsey, who had to move from guard to left tackle last season out of necessity, will make the offensive line better.
“If (Jager) Burton can be (Luke) Fortner-like at center, this offensive line can be a lot better,” Hiles said. “Honestly, if they are just average or a little better the offense is going to click. Even if they are just like an average SEC line and do not have as much leakage as last year, then this offense will be fine.”
A lot of Hiles’ faith comes from his belief in the way new quarterback Devin Leary will process new offensive coordinator Liam Coen’s offense. But Hiles also really likes what Vanderbilt transfer running back Ray Davis will give the offense.
“I don’t want to be negative on previous running backs but the vision of the running back is so important but the ability to be able to cut back is immense, too,” Hiles said. “The guy last year was more of a gap school guy. In the zone (blocking) concept there is no defined hole. You have to find the hole. Davis and the guys behind him all have good vision. If the hole is not where it is supposed to be, the running back can make a new hole.
“Coen won’t try to fit a square peg into a round hole. Last year there were quite a few problems with the OL issues and it is hard to fix that many leaky holes. I don’t think it will be like that this year.”

Set expectations for the offensive line high and they are more likely to perform at a high level. Set expectations at average, and you will get that.
I agree that the OL holds the keys to the UK offensive sports car, and it will either remain parked in the garage another season for fear of damaging collisions or Leary will be able to run it around the track 13 times to set new records.
I think the Cats are going to be A Lot better this year. Even with a tough schedule, the stars may be finally aligning. I heard a quote from Saban at SEC media days. It went "Expectations are a premeditated way to create disappointment". Sounds logical.
