After a tough 2022 soccer season that saw them struggle to find goals and wins, the Christian County Lady Colonels will be looking to change the culture for what is expected to be the final season in the program’s history. First-year head coach Peyton Mosier will look to lead the quick turnaround in attitude for the Lady Colonels in 2023.

While a look at the Christian County roster might lead one to think that this is still a young team in the molding, it is worth it to note that the sophomore class last season saw extensive time on the pitch. If that group, along with some incoming new faces buys into the system, there could be a big turnaround for the Lady Colonels this season.

Christian County finished the 2022 season with a 2-14-1 record. The Lady Colonels had their problems finding the back of the net last season, scoring more than 2 goals only once all season long and being shut out eight times over the course of the season. So, increasing offensive firepower will be a priority for Christian County in 2023.

Not only is increasing offense a key but so will be finding a way to limit the opportunities for the opponent. The Lady Colonels gave up five or more goals seven times last season, a number that needs to decrease for a successful 2022. Part of that key will be to keep their goalie from being under constant fire by increasing the defensive pressure in the middle of the field.

The first thing the Lady Colonels will have to address is the loss of five seniors from last season’s roster. Olivia Fentress, who had 112 saves in goal, Jasmine Larkins, and Addison Piatt saw action in every match in Christian County and will leave some key slots to fill in the lineup.

Coach Mosier will look first to returning seniors Alayah Lander, Macy Bush, and Angel Johnson, along with junior Sadie Stuart, to be the leaders for his team this season.

Lander missed six matches last season but was still the team’s second-leading scorer with seven goals. Macy Bush scored three times last season and will have the opportunity to increase that total significantly this season. Johnson and Stuart should play much bigger roles in 2023 than they did in 2022.

New faces expected to make an impact this year will be freshman Jayleigh Campbell in the midfield, Carlie Hobson on defense, and Carleah Hobson at forward.

Early on, Coach Moshier says he likes the team chemistry and the way this group of young ladies appears to like being around each other. He is hoping that will lead to the team more quickly learning how each other likes to play and being able to play off of each other.

As he looks around the region, Moshier says it would appear that Madisonvillle-North Hopkins and Henderson County would be teams that will be a handful for everyone else in the region.

As for the schedule, in addition to their district contests, the home slate includes Madisonville, Apollo, and defending regional runner-up Trigg County. Christian County will hit the road for contests that will include Caldwell County, Franklin-Simpson, and Henderson County.

The Lady Colonels had their struggles during the preseason dropping a scrimmage on the road at Crittenden County and at home against Clarksville Northwest.

The Lady Colonels officially open the season August 7 when they host Logan County.
