The Lyon County Lyons will count heavily on a strong senior class as they try to repeat as 5th District champions this season.

Five starters return from last year’s 6-17 squad for their senior seasons.

Colt Bannister at center midfield is the team’s leading returning scorer. Bannister’s 16 goals were second on the squad last year. He also had five assists.

Forward Deven Guess had four assists last season and figures to play a much bigger role in the Lyon offense this season.

Also back are midfielder Zach Radivonyk, defensive center back Kooper McDowell and goalkeeper Jackson Crawford.

Crawford averaged 12 saves a match in 2022, finishing the year with 276 stops.

Look for freshmen Grady Walker and K’Veon Cain to help on offense this season while junior Bryan Porter and freshman Will Dunning will help out on the defensive side.

“We have a lot of young talent coming in this year with Grady Walker, Kamden Garrie, Hayden Holt, Jordon Jackson and Ethan Gossard,” said Lyon head coach Joe Guess. “All pretty much new to the game this year helping to make up the varsity team.”

But the Lyons will look for the senior class to lead.

“I don’t know if it’ll surprise a lot of people but I would say that our senior class will definitely be stepping up their level of play this year,” said Guess. “Deven Guess and Colt Bannister are looking to have standout seasons. Jackson Crawford as well.”

The Lyons would like to improve upon last year’s win total, but are just looking to continue getting better as the season gets underway.

“Our outlook for the season is always simple — to do better than we did the year before,” Guess noted. “We also look to try to repeat in claiming the district title this year.

“This is a young, strong willed, athletic group of guys. I believe that we will be able to be competitive with most teams and bring home some wins as well. We are looking forward to an exciting season with them and see what we can accomplish!”

The Lyons open the season Tuesday at home against Fort Campbell.
