The Fort Campbell Falcons continued its recent mastery of Lyon County on the soccer pitch with a 3-1 win over the Lyons Tuesday in Eddyville.
The win was the 14th in the past 17 meetings between the schools.
“It’s very good to start the season again. We’re always reconstructing new teams. We never have the same team coming back and I thought they played well together,” said Alex Romero, who is beginning his third tour as head coach of the Falcons.
Dylan McDonald, who scored two goals as a freshman last year, got the Falcons on the board first.
Mateo Cerritos-Gatto put the Falcons up 2-0 as he equaled his scoring output from last season in just one quarter this year.
Colt Bannister, the leading returning scorer from last year for Lyon County, got the Lyons on the board and cut the deficit in half.
Freshman Reni Johnson-Sandoval closed out the scoring for the Falcons, who continually beat the Lyons in the midfield and to 50-50 balls.
“We’re going to have to improve our defense. We’ve got a lot of young guys on that back line, and so we’ve got to control the midfield,” said Lyon County Coach Joe Guess. We didn’t have much to play against them when they attacked in the middle.”
The defenses played much better in the second half although Fort Campbell ended up with several good looks. Lyon goalie Jackson Crawford made several point-blank saves to keep the Falcons off the board.
“I think we missed a few golden opportunities, but overall I think we played well. But there’s a lot of room for improvement,” Romero said.
Fort Campbell will host Webster County Thursday, while Lyon County gets a week to prepare for University Heights Academy as they get set to meet in the first round of the All-A Classic Region Tournament.
