It has been 10 years since the Daviess County Panthers have not won the 3rd Region boys’ soccer championship. And, if Saturday’s match against the Hopkinsville Tigers was any indication, the Panthers are not inclined to see their streak end any time soon.
The Panthers broke open a competitive match with six goals in the second half as they ran past Hopkinsville 8-0 in Owensboro.
The Panthers came roaring out of the gate. Gabe Sandefur scored just four minutes into the match, putting the ball into the net off an assist from Sam Glover.
From there, the rest of the first half was a defensive battle, as the Tigers were able to keep the Panthers from finding the net again until the final two minutes of the half when Jack Quisenberry took a pass from Cam Bell and scored to make it 2-0.
Quisenberry scored again just four minutes into the second half to extend the Daviess County lead to 3-0. Quisenberry assisted on a goal from Sam Glover at the 56:00 mark, giving the Panthers a 4-0 lead. Glover put a shot into the net six minutes after that and the lead had blown open to 5-0.
The second-half avalanche continued at the 67:00 when Cameron Bell scored his first goal of the afternoon, giving the Panthers a 6-0 lead. Daviess County found the net again when Lukas Humphrey scored with just five minutes left to get it to 7-0. Two minutes later the Panthers kept pouring it on with another goal to move the lead to 8-0.
The loss drops Hopkinsville to 1-2 on the season. The Tigers are scheduled to be back in action Monday evening when they host the Owensboro Red Devils at the Stadium of Champions.
