At Frederick Douglass High School, Ty Bryant was versatile enough that even on a powerhouse team he played defensive back, receiver, running back, punt returner, kick returner, placekick holder and punt coverage gunner.
Now Bryant, a true freshman, is making his presence felt at Kentucky so well that he’s apparently No. 2 on the depth chart at safety after UK’s second scrimmage on Saturday.
The 6-0, 185-pound Bryant, who was also a standout baseball player, has impressed not only teammates but also coach Mark Stoops.
“I’ve really been pleased with Ty,” Stoops said after Saturday’s scrimmage. “It’s nice that he was here in the spring. Not surprising, but he’s very coachable. He works extremely hard. He’s going to be good on special teams.
“He’s in the two-deep rotation at safety. You know that takes some work.”
Stoops said Bryant had been “pretty reliable” for a true freshman considering the multiple challenges and formations that Kentucky defensive coordinator Brad White uses.

A freshman putting in the work necessary to succeed. A gifted athlete rising up the depth chart at the college level. Very impressive.
