Caldwell County’s girls got off to a great start in Tuesday’s home 7th District matchup against Madisonville-North Hopkins.

The Lady Tigers generated several good scoring opportunities early, and cashed in at the 20th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

One shot rebounded off the keeper and another shot rang off the post before Mariah Merritt gathered in the ball on the left side of the box and beat the goalkeeper into the far side of the net.

Caldwell (3-3 overall, 0-1 district) got to the first water break with that 1-0 lead as the teams battled the hot, muggy conditions inside the wall at Butler Stadium in Princeton.

But Madisonville (3-2, 1-0) came out of that break firing. The Lady Maroons took control of the contest with three goals in 12 minutes to get to halftime with a 3-1 advantage, and went on to capture a 6-1 7th District victory.

McKinley Wilson had two of those first-half goals. She finished in front in the 27th minute to tie the game.

Her second goal came when she dribbled in after a taking a long kick and putting one past the keeper in the 38th minute to make it 3-1.

Madison Hill scored in between those goals in the 31st minute on a blast from 25 yards out.

Tuesday’s game was postponed momentarily in the second half when the sprinklers came on at one end of Butler Stadium.

Kailey Barber had back-to-back goals in the 46th and 48th minutes to extend the margin to 5-1.

Ella Knight scored off a rebound in the 58th minute to finish off the scoring for Madisonville.

The Lady Maroons have taken the last four meetings with Caldwell and lead all-time 31-9-1.

The Lady Tigers will next go to University Heights Academy in Hopkinsville on Thursday.
