Kentucky offensive coordinator Liam Coen has had good things to say about quarterback Devin Leary consistently since he transferred to UK from North Carolina State in January.
However, he’s not had a lot to say about who will be Kentucky’s backup quarterback in case Leary is injured.
“Feel pretty good,” Coen said Tuesday when asked about the backup quarterback battle. “ I think those guys have competed at a high level and gotten a ton of really good work in and a ton of reps.
“All have had ups and downs but there’s been a couple guys that have been consistent and have improved throughout this training camp. Definitely feel better about it than we did about a year ago or two years ago or even this spring.”
Former Somerset standout Kaiya Sheron got a start last year when Will Levis was injured and UK lost to South Carolina. However, teammates have praised the way he played in spring practice and progress he made over the summer.
And Coen did help recruit Sheron before he left UK after the 2021 season.
“He’s played at a high level, and he’s improved tremendously since I first met Kaiya,” Coen said.

I believe Coach Stoops has this program moving in the right direction, and I believe he is not finished with his program building mission.
The biggest criticism I hear about Coach Stoops over his time at UK has been his failure to develop and give QB2 game experience early in the season in anticipation of the critical moments later in the season when QB2 will be needed due to injury, etc.
I trust the coaches to identify QB2 and QB3, but I believe that QB2 should be getting in game possessions in these early games.
Your right professor that’s one area he needs to work on. We had so many QB that went on transfer due lack of playing time.
With you on QB2 Professor
The Stoops playbook reads that you either start or you don’t play until someone at your position gets hurt. Second string kids need PT, especially in blowout games. It gives them experience, confidence, and reduces injury potential to starters. Maybe his coordinators will get more say about that.
I think you will see more OL play this year hopefully
