
The Christian County volleyball team is off to its best start in seven seasons after completing a season sweep over 8th-District rivals Hopkinsville with a 3-0 victory on Thursday.
The Lady Colonels improved to 4-1, 3-1 in district play, and claimed their eighth-straight victory over the Lady Tigers. Hopkinsville slipped to 2-4, 1-3 in district play.
A pair of aces by Skylar Kirby got the Lady Colonels out to a 4-1 lead in the first set, and a Shiloh Baker ace made it 12-4. The Lady Tigers got as close as eight points at 18-10 after a Mariana Nieyra ace, but Christian County closed on a 7-2 run to claim the opener.
The Lady Colonels raced out to a 10-4 advantage in the second and were in control at 20-5 after a Kirby kill. Trailing 22-5, Hoptown showed some life with a 5-0 spurt sparked by an ace from Amy Toms, but Christian County duplicated the 13-point first-set win to lead 2-0.
Hopkinsville led 4-0 and took six of the first ten points in the final set before the Lady Colonels surged in front at 7-6 and never trailed the rest of the way.
Three straight kills for Hoptown’s Ajayla Shiraef tied it at 11-11, but Cam Armstrong capped an 8-2 Christian County run with back-to-back kills to force a Lady Tiger timeout at 19-13.
A pair of Anaysia Bagwell kills put the Lady Colonels up 23-18 and drew another Hoptown timeout. The Lady Tigers responded with four of the following five points but couldn’t avoid a three-point loss to end the match.
Christian County will welcome Heritage Christian Academy to Colonel Gym on Tuesday in search of a fourth district victory. The Lady Colonels took the season’s first meeting with the Lady Warriors 3-0.
Hopkinsville will travel to Fort Campbell on Tuesday trying to top the Lady Falcons for the second time this year.
