For the second time this season, the Todd County Central girls’ soccer team and a 13th-District opponent couldn’t be separated after 80 minutes and a pair of five-minute golden goal overtimes. And just as they did in their first district victory at Franklin-Simpson, the Lady Rebels prevailed in a penalty kick shootout to knock off hosts Russellville 2-1 on Thursday.
Todd Central improved to 2-1 in district play, with each match decided by a single goal. Russellville suffered its second district defeat, slipping to 3-3 overall.
Trailing the Lady Panthers 1-0 midway through the first half, Melanie Chamberlaine evened the match off an assist from Scarlett Lancaster.
Neither team scored the rest of the way in regulation, with Darby Delph standing tall in goal for the Lady Rebels with 24 saves to force overtime.
After ten scoreless minutes, the teams headed to a penalty kick shootout. Chamberlaine and Lancaster found the back of the net with their attempts, and Delph made a pair of saves to earn the Lady Rebels’ sixth straight win in the series.
Todd Central improved to 2-2-1 and will host Logan County on Tuesday. The Lady Cougars handed the Lady Rebels their only district defeat so far with a 2-1 victory back on August 15.
