The Todd County Central girls’ soccer team was slow out of the gate on Saturday at the Lady Colonel Showcase, trailing Fort Campbell at halftime of their opener before finding the back of the net three times over the final 40 minutes for a third victory in four matches.
The Lady Falcons struck first, scoring their first goal of the season on Elizabeth Allen’s 25-yard free kick that sailed over the outstretched arms of Todd Central goalkeeper Darby Delph.
Despite the Lady Rebels having most of the possession, the Fort Campbell defense kept the Lady Rebels at bay throughout the first half, and Avaley Moore was only called on to make two saves.
The Lady Falcons had a chance to double the advantage in the half’s final moments, but Delph was quick off her line to snuff out a one-on-one opportunity.
However, it was all Todd Central after the break, and the Lady Rebels needed less than nine minutes to get on the board in the second half. Melanie Chamberlaine pounced on a loose ball in the Fort Campbell 18-yard box and cut her low shot across goal and into the far side-netting to tie it up in the 64th minute.
Delph traded her gloves for a spot in the Lady Rebels’ midfield after the break, and she nearly gave them the lead when her shot was saved at the near post with 23 minutes left. Only two minutes later, Delph stepped up to the spot after a handball in the box and converted a penalty kick for a 2-1 lead.
Chamberlaine added her second goal in the 64th minute when she picked up the ball in midfield, beat a defender down the right side, and rifled her close-range shot into the roof of the net. In search of a hat trick, Chamberlaine twice saw shots hit the post over the last 12 minutes.
Todd Central improved to 3-2-1 ahead of a nightcap matchup with Hopkinsville. On Tuesday, the Lady Rebels will jump back into district play with a visit from Franklin-Simpson.
Fort Campbell slipped to 1-5 with a pair of losses on Saturday and will travel to Calloway County on Tuesday.
