For the second straight week, the Trigg County Wildcats faced a fourth quarter gut check.

They were trailing Fort Campbell with several starters knocked out of the game with various injuries. Some of those guys returned to the field to help the Wildcats get a 26-21 win at Fryar Stadium.

Trailing 21-20, the Wildcats engineered a nine-play scoring drive capped by a 23-yard pass from Jerimyah Shearer to Jhaden Vaughn with 1:10 left for the go-ahead score.

Shearer had a revolving door on the sideline, hobbled by a leg injury for most of the night. Vaughn had been listed as doubtful coming into the game. But they were key factors in that final drive. Shearer finished the game 7-for-11 passing for 86 yards and added 83 rushing yards. Vaughn caught three second half passes for 40 yards.

But the Wildcats rode Davaree Gude to the victory. The sophomore ran 28 times for 246 yards – the most by a Wildcat since Kelsey Parham set the single-game record of 307 yards against LaRue County last year.

Gude scored the game’s first touchdown inside the final minute of the first half on an eight-yard run.

But Fort Campbell answered quickly out of the gate to begin the third quarter.

T.J. Dixon caught a 9-yard pass from Jonah Weisbrich four plays into the second half. Ryan Brewer’s PAT gave Fort Campbell its first lead of the game.

The Falcons extended it to 14-6 on the first play of their next drive. J.C. Perryman, who had a 67-yard touchdown pass against Hopkins County Central last week, added a 56-yard scoring pass Friday against the Wildcats.

Trigg answered on its next drive when Shearer found Peyton Williams for a 21-yard scoring strike that got the Wildcats to within 14-12.

The Wildcats took a 20-14 lead on a 38-yard run by Gude on the first play of the fourth quarter.

But the Falcons again answered quickly as Keshawn Dixon took a screen pass and rambled 67 yards to the house. Dixon had 87 yards on 10 carries and caught two passes for 89 yards.

Both teams had to battle through self-inflicted mistakes throughout the contest. Each team had a touchdown called back due to a penalty although Trigg County scored following theirs.

The Wildcats had 136 yards in penalties with six of those coming on first down plays in the second half and putting them in a hole to begin the new set of downs.

Weisbrich, who was a manager for the Falcon football team last year, threw for 223 yards and three scores. But the Falcons, who rushed for 98 yards in the first half, were held to minus-six yards in the second half.

Trigg County rolled up a season-high 454 yards and racked up 25 first downs. They also controlled the football for 33:47 of the game’s 48 minutes and ran 58 plays to 41 for Fort Campbell.

Both teams stand at 1-2. Fort Campbell plays Madisonville next week, while Trigg County returns home to play Russellville.
