Since a straight-set loss to district rival University Heights Academy on August 22, the Christian County Lady Colonels have reeled off three straight district wins. The latest came Tuesday night at Lyle Dunbar Gymnasium – a 25-18, 25-18, 25-16 win over Heritage Christian Academy.
The win moved the Lady Colonels to 5-1 and completed the season sweep over the Lady Warriors.
The Lady Colonels used a 5-0 run midway through the first set to grab the momentum. Another 5-0 run in the second set gave Christian County the lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
The Lady Colonels put together a 6-0 run early in the third set to finish off the sweep.
“I feel like we played really cohesively tonight. We got ahead multiple times the last time we played Heritage, and we struggled a little bit to close out in the third set and we ended up kind of going point for point,” said Lady Colonel Coach Samantha Self. “I was really proud of them for staying more consistent throughout the full match tonight.”
Camryn Armstrong had another strong night at the net with eight kills and three blocks. Skylar Kirby added seven kills and two blocks.
Peyton Owens had 11 assists, and Anaysia Bagwell put away five shots. Rylee Owens pitched in with four assists, six digs, and four aces for the Lady Colonels.
Katie Cansler had eight kills and seven digs for HCA. Bralee Fowler had eight digs, four kills, and one block, and Hadlee Hayes had 14 digs, six assists, and two kills.
“I was hoping for more communication tonight, knowing where we’re at in defense, moving our feet, being able to put the ball up to where we can be successful on the attack,” said HCA Coach Grace Stewart. “It wasn’t their best game tonight. They’re still working on it. Communicating is our big key. If we’re communicating and talking like we’re supposed to, then we’re a lot more successful.”
Christian County’s record stands at 5-1 overall and 4-1 in district play. They will play at defending region champion Madisonville on Thursday.
Heritage Christian Academy sees its modest two-match winning streak end. The Lady Warriors drop to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in the district. They will play at Caldwell County on Thursday.
