After getting outscored 15-3 in its first two games of the season, the Trigg County Wildcats feel like they are starting to turn the corner.
The Wildcats put together one of its most complete games of the season in defeating Russellville 3-0 Thursday night at the Complex. It was Trigg’s first win of the season in six starts and snapped a two-match winless streak against the Panthers.
The clean sheet was Trigg’s first in nearly a year – the last coming on September 10 of last year against Logan County.
The only thing giving Trigg County fits early were mosquitos the size of sparrows at the Complex, making the night uncomfortable for players, fans, and referees. After the aroma of mosquito repellent cut through the air, Trigg County cut into the scoreboard with three first half goals.
Alex Hurt got the scoring going for Trigg County, with his second goal of the season giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.
Peyton Moore took a pass from Nate Kelly two minutes later and found the net for a 2-0 Wildcat lead.
James Garnett rounded out the scoring for Trigg County with his third goal of the season in the 19th minute.
“We’re a program that’s won two games in the last two years and we didn’t know how to win,” Trigg Coach Kyle Bleidt said. “Tonight I think really is going to propel us with that momentum.
We know how to win now, we know when we’re in that situation, what we need to do and that’s something we’ve been looking for.”
Cam McCormick played all but three minutes in goal and didn’t allow a Panther shot to get past him.
“We still have a little shakiness obviously with (defender) Matthew Reeves still out. He’s a big part of our defense. But we’ve had some guys that have really stepped in and the expectation is you didn’t really want to put them in that situation but it’s next man up and they did well.”
Russellville had won two of its last three matches and fell to 5-6.
Trigg County is now 1-4-1 and will play at Hopkinsville on Monday.
