The Christian County Lady Colonels won the silver bracket of the Adair County Volleyball Classic Saturday at Lindsey Wilson College, winning three of its five matches.
The Lady Colonels opened play with a 25-15, 25-18 win over Danville Christian Academy (4-9).
Next up for CCHS was Adair County, who topped the Lady Colonels 25-21, 25-19. The tournament format was best-of-three instead of the traditional best-of-five.
Adair County (7-7) went 4-1 at the event and is just two wins away from equaling its win total from last year.
The Lady Colonels finished pool play with a three-set loss to Somerset 25-20, 24-26, 11-15 – a team that won 21 games last year.
“We started out strong with the win over Danville Christian and fought hard against Adair County but couldn’t close it out,” Coach Samatha Self said. “We then played back to back and unfortunately let the Somerset match slip away in the third set. That was frustrating because it made the difference between gold and silver brackets.”
The 1-2 record sent the Lady Colonels to the silver bracket where they defeated Foundation Christian Academy 25-14, 25-21.
FCA (6-10) is a private Bowling Green school in its fourth season of KHSAA play.
Eight hours after opening their day against Danville Christian, the Lady Colonels defeated them again for the championship of the silver bracket. The final score was 25-22, 23-25, 15-9.
Christian County got strong play at the net from Anaysia Bagwell and Skylar Kirby. Rylee Owens topped the Lady Colonel stat sheet in digs, while Ashlea Russell and Peyton Owens led the squad in assists. Peyton also led in aces.
“With just one match off to recover, we came back out much stronger and more unified against FCA. We saw DCA again in the championship, and although I would’ve liked to win that out in two (sets), I was proud of my team for digging deep for that win,” Self said.
Christian County is 9-3 and its 12-match start is its best since the 2011 team also began 9-3 on its way to 21 wins and a region runner-up finish.
The Lady Colonels will play at Union County on Monday. The Bravettes are putting together an impressive turnaround season – going from an 0-20 record two years ago to an 8-3 record this year and an appearance in the Class 2A State Tournament over the weekend.
On Thursday, the Lady Colonels get another shot at district leader University Heights Academy, who handed them a straight-set loss on August 22.
