Sometimes a game produces a play you know you will remember for a long, long time.
Kentucky’s 3-1 win over LSU to open Southeastern Conference volleyball play produced one of those unforgettable plays by Megan Wilson, a 6-4 outside hitter who transferred to UK from Oklahoma this season.
It was only fitting that her 11th kill was the final point in a 25-13 set four victory that wrapped up the match for UK to break a three-game losing streak.
But it was her play in the third set that saved a point for UK that was unbelievable.
She dove over the scorer’s table in a long rally to get the ball back into play, immediately got up to get back into the play and then got the point-ending kill to give UK a 9-3 lead in the set.
Kentucky coach Craig Skinner said effort like that was “critical” to a team’s success.
“A lack of effort leads to bad things,” Skinner said.
He said there were a couple of acceptable reasons for not going after a ball — a whistle that ends play or being put in a dangerous situation.
“She obviously did not listen to the second one,” Skinner said.
