He might only be ranked as a three-star prospect but 6-1, 220-pound Brunswick, Ga., linebacker Devin Smith certainly had offers that project him to be a much better player — and he committed to Kentucky early Saturday.

Smith went with UK over LSU while others in his top five were Alabama, Auburn and South Carolina.

His only official visit was to UK when the Cats opened the season against Ball State and he also made unofficial visits to Lexington because he liked the “family atmosphere” in coach Mark Stoops’ program.

Smith is considered one of the nation’s top 50 linebackers and could be another gem for the Cats from the state of Georgia. Defensive backs coach Chris Collins was his primary recruiter.

Smith did not get to announce his commitment the way he wanted because his team lost a showdown game Friday night. He waited until about 3 a.m. to post his decision on X (formerly Twitter).

“Not the way I wanted to announce it on a night of a tough loss in the city championship, however, I’m happy to announce my decision to spend the next 3-4 years furthering my football and academic career at The University Of Kentucky,” Smith posted.
