Mayfield was billed as one of the top Class 2A football teams in the state, and the Cardinals played that role well Friday night.

Mayfield built a 28-0 lead after one quarter, led 49-0 at halftime and dealt Caldwell County a 63-7 setback in 1st District action at Tiger Stadium in Princeton.

The Cardinals (5-1) totaled 400 yards of offense, with 303 of that coming in the first half.

The Mayfield defense held Caldwell to just one yard in the first half and 93 yards in the contest.

Quarterback Zane Cartwright threw for 157 yards and two touchdowns for the Cardinals.

Jutoriaus Starks had a pair of touchdown runs early in the game — on 5- and 8-yard scampers.

Xavier Biggers caught two TD passes in the first half, making 39- and 32-yard scoring grabs.

Cartwright scored on a 14-yard scramble in the first quarter.

Mehki Dumas had a 3-yard touchdown run as part of his 96-yard rushing performance.

Ian Williams added a 1-yard scoring run just before halftime.

Mayfield added two more scores in the second half.

Ken Shelley returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Josiah England had a 2-yard TD run in the fourth period.

Caldwell’s best series came early in the second half.

Kicking off to start the half, the Tigers elected to go with a pooch kick. However, Timothy Nichols’ kick went off a Mayfield player and was recovered by the Tigers’ Drew Stevens.

Caldwell (0-7) took over at the Mayfield 42. Six running plays later, Spikes scored on a 12-yard run. Nichols kicked the PAT.

But that would be the Tigers’ only score of the night as Caldwell fell to Mayfield for the 10th straight year.

Spikes led the Tiger ground game with 30 yards on seven carries.

Xzavier Lee caught four passes for 28 yards.

Mayfield’s 63 points were the most ever given up in a game by a Caldwell team. Opponents twice reached 62 points, but one of those was a Tiger win. Both instances came in the 2011. Caldwell beat Calloway County 80-62 but lost to Mayfield 62-14.

Mayfield’s 49 points in the first half were the most ever by a Tiger opponent.

Caldwell will take next week off for fall break before heading to Murray for another district date on Oct. 13.

The Tigers won’t play at home again until the regular-season finale against Trigg County on Oct. 27.
