Let’s just say that the Owensboro Catholic Aces are pretty doggone good. The Aces looked the part of a Class 2A title contender Friday night as they manhandled the Todd County Central Rebels 57-7 at Steele Stadium in Owensboro.
The Aces wasted no time in putting this game in the win column. Catholic scored 37 points in the first 7 1/2-minutes of the game to take a 37-0 lead and bring about the running clock 2/3 of the way into the opening quarter.
Owensboro Catholic’s standout junior quarterback Brady Atwell was unstoppable. Atwell passed for 313 yards and seven touchdowns, and that was with him playing only in the first half. Five different Aces’ receivers caught a touchdown pass, including two each by William Carrico and Noah Rhinerson.
The Rebels were held scoreless by the Aces’ defense, which also came up with a safety in the contest, until the final 90 seconds of the game when Miles Reding connected with B.J. Farlow for a 37 yard score to set the final 50 point margin.
The Rebels go to 0-1 in district play with the loss. If the Rebels aim to hold on to their hope of a home field game in the playoffs, the need to pick up a win next week at home when they take on the Fort Campbell Falcons.
