Coming into Friday night’s district matchup with visiting Calloway County, the Hopkinsville Tigers’ highest output of the season was 20 points in a narrow loss to Christian County. But with the offense clicking from the opening whistle on the way to four first-half touchdowns, the Tigers blanked the Lakers 43-0 to pick up their first victory of the season.
Hopkinsville began its fourth-straight win over Calloway on its opening possession when Darrius Green shook off a tackle after a screen pass and hit the sideline for an 83-yard touchdown.
After a Calloway fumble, the Tigers were back in the endzone on Artavius Moses’ three-yard plunge for a 14-0 lead with 7:20 left in the opening quarter.
An errant snap on 4th and 10 from the Calloway 41 set the Tigers up again, and it was 21-0 after Aiden King hit Treston Kay for a 29-yard TD on the first play after the turnover.
King and Kay hooked up again for a short touchdown in the final seconds of the half, and the Tigers led 28-0 at the break.
It took less than two minutes in the second half for Hopkinsville to trigger the running clock, with Kay collecting a pass for a 16-yard scoring strike and King targeting Amoni Johnson for the two-point conversion.
Green added his second rushing touchdown of the night with 7:37 left, with the 43 points the most the Tigers have scored since they hung 49 on the Lakers last season.
Hopkinsville moved to 1-6 and is off next week before facing Logan County on October 13. The Cougars have won the last four in the series, including a 21-7 victory in the second round of the playoffs last season.
