Hopkins Central Ends Trigg’s Playoff Hopes With 40-14 Win

Hopkins County Central defeated Trigg County 40-14 Friday night at Perdue Field, ending the Wildcats’ playoff hopes and keeping them winless in district play.

Calil McNary ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns for Hopkins County Central, setting new school records for career yards and touchdowns.

His night was part of a 456-yard offensive performance from the Storm who broke a 7-7 tie with 26 straight points.

Trigg County fumbled on its first play of the game. Eight plays later, Isaac Earl hit Issac Manning for a 42-yard touchdown for the Storm.

Trigg evened the score on a Davaree Gude 11-yard touchdown run with 3:38 left in the opening quarter. The Wildcats managed just 59 yards the rest of the game as Hopkins Central used the feet of McNary to extend its lead. He scored on runs of 7 and 26 yards, with the latter his 28th career touchdown and passing Lucas Crawley for the record.

Up 19-7 at halftime, Logan Rodgers scored a pair of second-half touchdowns. McNary’s third touchdown came in the third quarter from a yard out.

Hopkins Central carried the football 43 times for 301 yards and ran 20 more plays than the Wildcats.

Trigg County has made a switch qt quarterback moving forward and was limited to a season-low 119 yards.

Gude ran for 85 yards on 19 carries and lost 13 yards when he was sacked while splitting quarterback duties with freshman King Williams, who was 8-of-13 passing for 53 yards.

Hopkins Central improved to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the district. It was its first win over Trigg County since 2008 and only their second in 11 career meetings.

Trigg County drops to 2-6 entering a bye week. The loss eliminates them from the postseason no matter the outcome of their Oct. 20 game at McLean County. It’s the first time since 2016 that Trigg County has missed the playoffs and continues a postseason drought since moving up to Class 3A in 2011. Trigg’s last postseason win came in 2014, the longest time without a playoff win since the KHSAA expanded the playoffs in 1992.

Trigg County’s six seniors – Jhaden Vaughn, TayShaun Linton, Kahmani Bush, Gaven Crump, Jeremiah Schneider, Charles Dannelly, Brent Goodman, and Brandon Moser – were honored before their last game at Perdue Field.
