It’s not often that a team wins a soccer match without putting the ball in the goal themselves. That is what happened to the Todd County Central Rebels Sunday evening in Bowling Green.
An early match own goal turned out to be the only score of the match as the Todd County Central Rebels took a 1-0 win over Glasgow in the 4th Region quarterfinals at ‘The Pit’ at Bowling Green Junior High, home field for the Bowling Green Purples.
The Rebels had chances to score throughout the match but could not get the ball in the net. Todd County Central finished with 16 shots in the match. On the other side, the Rebels limited the Scotties to just two shots on goal in picking up their 8th shutout of the season.
The only goal on the board came at the 14:30 mark of the match. A Glasgow defender was trying to head the ball back to his goalie to set up the offense. The goalie was out of position when the ball was headed and it deflected off him and the left post and snuck into the net giving Todd County Central the 1-0 lead that would not change for the rest of the night.
Glasgow had one big chance to even things up at 58:30 with the ball in play just a few feet from the goal. However, Jose Anastacio made a big-time play in front of the goal and cleared the ball, ending the biggest threat of the night for the Scotties.
In addition to the big play from Anastacio, the Rebels got big defensive play from Brett Harris, Zack Robinson, and Cole Gilbert.
While they didn’t put the ball in the net, the Rebels got some solid offensive work from Tanner Henderson, Ivan Lopez, Charlie Campbell, and Tyler Baker.
The win puts Todd County Central at 14-5-1 on the season and moves them into Wednesday night’s semifinals for the second year in a row. The Rebels will take on Warren Central at 5:30 at Bowling Green Junior High School. The Dragons advanced Sunday with a 5-0 win over Russell County.
