They have been the regional favorite all season long, and now that the 2nd Region boys’ soccer tournament is here, the question is whether or not any team can stop the Madisonville-North Hopkins Maroons from picking up their second straight regional title.
Last year, the Maroons rolled through the regional, giving up just one goal in the three matches. Madisonville would end up falling in the state quarterfinals in a tough 1-0 loss to St. Xavier.
The 2023 2nd Region tournament gets underway Monday night on the Maroons home field, so add that in to the list of advantages the Maroons have going for them.
The first match Monday night at 5:30 has 8th District champion University Heights (12-8-1) taking on 5th District runner-up Lyon County (3-15-1). The two teams meet in the 2nd Region All A Classic with the Blazers picking up a 4-0 win.
The 7:30 contest Monday will have 7th District champs Madisonville-North Hopkins (16-3-3) battling 6th District runner-up Webster County (11-10-1). The two played September 25 with the Maroons coming out on top 5-0.
Quarterfinal play continues Tuesday evening at 5:30 when 5th District champion Trigg County (2-9-2) hooks up with 8th District runner-up Christian County (7-10-0). The two teams did not meet during the regular season. They met August 31 of last season with the Colonels taking a 3-1 win.
Tuesday night’s second contest has 6th District champ Henderson County (11-4-3) taking on the 7th District runner-up, Hopkins County Central (3-10-1). Back on September 7, the Colonels rolled to a 10-0 win in Mortons Gap.
The semifinals are set for Wednesday evening at 5:30 and 7:30, with the championship match set for Thursday at 7:30pm.
