O-Cath ‘Aces’ District Test Against Fort Campbell

The Owensboro Catholic Aces once again have given an indication of why they are one of the teams expected to contend for a Class 2A state championship. The Aces scored early and often as they rolled to a 56-7 win over the Fort Campbell Falcons Friday night at Steele Stadium in Owensboro.

The win clinched the top seed in the 2nd District for the Aces, which means they will host Caldwell County in two weeks in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Aces were rolling from the beginning Friday night, led by quarterback Brady Atwell. Atwell threw three touchdown passes in the opening quarter as Catholic put up 34 points in the first 12 minutes of the game. Atwell threw a 10-yard pass to Noah Rhinerson less than two minutes into the game. He then hit his favorite target William Carrico for a 12-yard score and a 5-yard score.

The Aces added rushing touchdowns from Elijah Blair and Willliam Pride to take a 34-0 lead after one.

The avalanche against the Falcons continued early in the second quarter. Atwell threw his fourth touchdown to Wayne Ebelhar less than two minutes into the quarter to get to the running clock at 41-0. Four minutes later Atwell had his fifth touchdown of the night, and 43rd of the season, when he connected with Mitchell Sims from 24 yards out to give the Aces a 48-0 lead at the break.

Fort Campbell’s score came at 5:40 to go in the third when J.P. Perryman hit Maurice Moore with an 8-yard pass to make it 48-7.

Owensboro Catholic reserves would add a score early in the final quarter to hit the final margin.

The Aces finished with 403 total yards on the night, 323 of those coming through the air.

Fort Campbell was limited to just 23 total yards. The Falcons had 31 passing and -8 rushing.

J.P. Perryman finished the night 9-18-1 passing for the 31 yards.

The loss drops the Falcons to 5-4 on the season and 2-1 in district play. The Falcons will finish the regular season at home against Webster County next Friday night.

The Falcons will also be at home for the first round of the playoffs as they host Murray.

Owensboro Catholic improves to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the district. The Aces will host Caldwell County in the opening round of the Class 2A playoffs in two weeks.
