With Kentucky’s problem stopping the run against Tennessee in last week’s loss, it was easy to overlook the play of freshman Ty Bryant.

The former Frederick Douglass High School star made his first start at safety and responded in a big way. He had 12 tackles — five solos, seven assists — to lead the team

“Ty stepped in and played fantastic against a team like that  with how fast they go. The way he played, he was our defensive player of the week,” Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said.

Bryant has played in all eight games this season and now has 20 total tackles.

“He had a lot of good plays (against Tennessee). He had a bunch of production for us. How we keep tallies on production points, he had a lot of production,” Stoops said. “Did a very good job, so very pleased with him.”

Former UK all-SEC defensive back Van Hiles has become a Bryant fan watching him play and understands why UK defensive coordinator Brad White likes having him on the field.

“Ty’s eyes are good. He’s always where he’s supposed to be,” Hiles said. “He’s gained the trust of Brad White and that’s probably why he is playing more. He is more trustworthy than some older guys. He’s shown he knows how to play and can make plays.”
