At 9 a.m. Sunday morning, the Perry family was still undecided.

A college announcement ceremony for Lyon County standout Travis Perry was scheduled for 2 p.m. at Jason White Gymnasium in Eddyville. The younger Perry had narrowed his choices down to five schools — Alabama, Cincinnati, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Western Kentucky.

“We spent 7 hours around the table last night discussing the pros and cons of each school,” said the player’s father, Ryan Perry, who also happens to be his head coach at Lyon County.

“We went to bed at 1:00 last night without a decision.”

In the end, a Kentucky kid getting an offer from the University of Kentucky proved to be too much to pass up.

“My whole life I’ve worked hard and dreamed of playing college basketball,” Travis said in front of a large crowd of family, friends and fans. “I’ve spent countless hours in the gym trying to chase this dream. But today I finally get to make that dream a reality. And I’ll be playing college basketball at the University of Kentucky.”

With that, the gym erupted into thunderous applause and a standing ovation that seemed to last for several minutes.

“Travis made the decision about 10 minutes after 9 this morning,” Ryan Perry said afterward. “There were so many good reasons to go to each school. It was really a difficult decision.”

Perry still has his senior season to look forward to at Lyon County, which will chase its third-straight 2nd Region championship next March.

But Perry will take his state prep scoring record with him next year to the University of Kentucky.
