After a down season in 2022-2023, the Webster County Lady Trojans look to rebound in 2023-2024 and put themselves back in their usual position of being a 2nd Region contender. The Lady Trojans will do so with a roster that returns some significant pieces and has another year of maturity under its belt.
The Lady Trojans finished 10-21 last season, falling to Hopkins County Central in the opening round of the 2nd Region tournament. Gone from that team is leading scorer Katelyn Cates, who averaged 12.1 points and 4.3 rebounds a contest, and Brooke Shepherd, who chipped in 7.8 points a night.
While those are two noteworthy losses for the Lady Trojans, Coach Josh Patton returns a core of five players that saw action in at least 27 games for Webster County last year.
Junior Hannah Yates looks to be a leading candidate to ascend to the top of the scoring column. Yates averaged 9 points a game last season and was the Lady Trojans top threat from behind the arc, knocking down 83 of 247 3-point shots.
Yates will get help from Jaycie Wright. Wright, one of six juniors on the roster, averaged 7.4 points per game and was the Lady Trojans’ second-leading rebounder at 3.7.
Malorie Austin and Karsyn Cates each saw action in 31 games for Webster County in 2022-2023. Austin averaged 3.4 points and Cates 3.1 points last season and both should see a significant increase in their roles with the graduation of Katelyn Cates and Brooke Shepherd.
Addison Thompson could also play a bigger part for the Lady Trojans during her upcoming senior season.
Webster County will face its usual tough schedule. In addition to the 6th District contests with Henderson County and Union County, the Lady Trojans will take on Madisonville, Bullitt East, Hopkins Central, Calloway County, Crittenden County, Daviess County, Bowling Green, Christian County, Ohio County, and Marshall County.
The Lady Trojans officially get the new season started November 28th with a road trip to Lyon County.
