It’s a shame that this one occurred in a scrimmage setting. After spotting Great Crossing a 15-0 lead, the Lyon County Lyons roared back and claimed a 67-65 win Saturday at the Zip Line Classic at Martin County in a meeting of the two top-ranked teams in the Courier-Journal’s preseason coaches basketball poll.
The Lyons, who were ranked #1 in the poll, got 34 points from UK signee Travis Perry, including 24 in the second half.
Great Crossing, ranked #2 in the Courier’s preseason rankings, got a big start from Malachi Moreno and led Lyon County 20-11 after the opening quarter. The Lyons would cut the lead to 33-29 at the half.
Great Crossing was able to add just a little distance in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 54-48.
The Lyon defense then limited Great Cross to just three 3-pointers in the final quarter, all coming from Gage Richardson, and two free throws from Vince Dawson, as they came the rest of the way back to complete their rally.
In addition to Perry’s 34 points, Brady Shoulders finished with 18. Bray Kirk had 7 and Jack Reddick added 6.
Vince Dawson led Great Crossing with 17 points. Junius Burrell added 14. After Malachi Moreno had 10 points in the opening quarter, the Lyon County defense limited him to just three points over the final three quarters.
Lyon County will officially open the season Tuesday evening when they host Vienna.
