PREVIEW – Young Caldwell Team Ready to Make a Move

There’s a lot of youth on the Caldwell County Lady Tiger basketball team, but there’s also quite a bit of experience.

Freshman guards KaMyiah “Tink” Clark and Medeline Thomas are the top two returning scorers, but both have seen quite a bit of varsity action the last two years and aren’t your typical freshmen.

They should give new head coach David Brown a significant one-two scoring punch as he tries to implement a more up-tempo game plan this season for the Lady Tigers.

Brown, who coached the girls’ team at Calloway County last season, took over the Caldwell ladies after Chuck Mitchell left that program to become the new boys’ head coach at Caldwell County in the offseason.

Clark was second on the team last season at 10.5 points a game while Thomas checked in at 8.6 points a night.

However, the offense should get another boost with the return of junior Brylee Butts. The athletic Butts, who also plays volleyball and softball, sat out the basketball season a year ago. But she scored 9.3 points a game as a freshman two seasons ago.

Several other players with starting experience return from last year.

Junior Nyla Sykes averaged 3.8 points and 4.9 rebounds a game a year ago.

Freshman Medeline Thomas looks to be one of Caldwell’s top scorers this season.

Sophomore KeDarriah Thompson gives the Lady Tigers a presence in the post. She led the team with 7.4 rebounds a contest a year ago while scoring 2.1 points.

Lone senior Jakhia Copeland got 2.5 points a game last season.

Junior guard Morgan Aikins is back with the team after sitting out last season. She scored 3.1 points a contest as a freshman.

Junior Benashka Thomas and sophomore Davani Williams also have varsity experience and provide some depth.

The Lady Tigers will look to improve upon last year’s 9-21 showing, but must increase their point production after getting 45.8 point a game in the 2022-23 season.

Height is an issue for Caldwell, but the Lady Tigers look to make up for that shortcoming by getting up and down the floor.

Jakhia Copeland is Caldwell County’s only senior this season.

Madisonville-North Hopkins looks to be the clear favorite in the 7th District this season — and could be the top team in the 2nd Region as well.

However, the No. 2 spot in the district this season appears to be a possibility for Caldwell, with both Hopkins County Central and Dawson Springs fielding young teams.

Caldwell’s girls get a tough season opener at Marshall County on Tuesday night.
