After dropping their first game of the season last time out at Madisonville-North Hopkins, the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers found themselves trailing after a cold-shooting first quarter on Monday against visiting Webster County. However, Shiyah Forte dominated in the paint and Kahtahvia Fleming provided the long-distance scoring to help Hoptown pull away for an 82-47 victory.
A pair of free throws and a long three-pointer by Hannah Yates gave Webster an early 8-4 advantage. Hopkinsville’s Crislyn Murray tied the game with a bucket down low, but a jumper inside the final five seconds put the Lady Trojans up 15-13.
The Lady Tigers scored the first four points of the second quarter before Jaycie Wright tied it up at 17-17 with a layup. Alicia Davis had the answer, drilling a three-pointer, converting a layup, and knocking down a pair of free throws to put Hopkinsville in front for good.
Fleming capped a 19-2 run with a bucket in the lane for a 34-19 lead before the Lady Trojans scored the last seven points of the half to cut the margin to eight.
Fleming hit a pair of threes in the third quarter, with the second giving the Lady Tigers a nine-point cushion with 4:20 left in the frame. Hopkinsville closed on an 11-2 spurt, including seven-straight and a buzzer-beating layup by Davis for a 54-36 score.
Forte added eight points in the fourth to finish with a game-high 24. Fleming scored 21, including 11 in the fourth and a perfect eight for eight performance at the free throw line.
The Lady Tigers have some time in the gym before heading to Caldwell County on December 12, Hoptown took last season’s meeting 69-43 in Princeton.
