On Wednesday, the Heritage Christian Academy boys’ basketball team was in the midst of a three-game skid and hadn’t broken 60 points since an opening-night win over Clarksville Christian. But after scoring 70 points in a win on Thursday over 8th-District foes Fort Campbell, the Warriors followed on Friday with a 79-68 victory over visiting Christian Fellowship to even their record at 3-3 and build some early-season momentum.
The Warriors trailed early on Friday but tied the game at 9-9 after a three-pointer by Jason Leek. Leek posted 37 points in the victory over the Falcons and was right back at it with seven points in the first quarter. A bucket by Christian Fellowship’s Samuel Grigg tied the game before HCA’s Bradley Boyd beat the buzzer with a putback for a 17-15 advantage.
After Christian Fellowship opened the second quarter with a bucket, the Warriors reeled off a 16-0 run to take the lead for good. Layton Giltner converted a three-point play on a putback, and after a three-pointer by Landon Wells, Giltner scored in the paint to make it 33-17 with 2:35 left in the half.
The Eagles’ Elijah Grigg came into the game averaging over 30 points per game, and he got started on a big second half with ten points in the third. Christian Fellowship got within 11 points early in the quarter, but after Leek drilled a halfcourt buzzer-beater, the Warriors held a comfortable 18-point edge to start the fourth.
Elijah Grigg poured in 17 more points to finish with a game-high 36, and the Eagles were back within nine points after Samuel Grigg connected on a triple with :46 to play. But Boyd answered with a three for HCA, and Leek added two free throws to seal the win.
Leek finished with 21 points to lead the Warriors, followed by Wells and Giltner with 15 each.
HCA will be back in action on Tuesday with a trip to face Foundation Christian Academy. The Warriors took both meetings with the Falcons last season and have never lost in the series.
