The Trigg County Wildcats put the defensive clamps on Crittenden County in the second half on Friday and defeated the Rockets 66-50 in Marion.

It was Trigg’s first win of the season as they avoided the school’s first 0-4 start in 30 years.

A 10-0 fourth-quarter run was part of a Wildcat defensive effort that saw Trigg turn over the Rockets ten times in the fourth quarter and 21 times for the game.

Joshaun Bridges’ bucket to begin the final frame kick-started the decisive run. Kamani Bush hit four free throws and putbacks by Jhaden Vaughn and Davaree Gude during the run saw the Wildcats lead 52-39 with 3:45 left.

Trigg County held a 26-9 advantage in points from turnovers and hit 19 of 26 at the free throw line in the second half – a 180 turn from the team’s 43% rate coming into the contest.

Jhaden Vaughn needed only seven shots to score 15 points and pull down 21 rebounds. The senior is less than 30 boards away from becoming just a handful of Trigg County players to score 1,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds in his career.

Vaughn had four offensive rebounds and was 6 of 10 at the free throw line. However, his 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter pushed the Trigg County lead to 48-39, and the Rockets would get no closer.

Trigg put three other players into double figures in the scoring column. Jerimyah Shearer scored 13 points and had four of Trigg’s 15 steals.

Gude and Bush each scored 10 points.

Sophomore Bryson Walker led Crittenden County with 20 points, and Gabe Keller added nine points and nine rebounds. The Rockets played without its leading scorer, Travis Champion, who sat out the game due to an injury.

Crittenden County had beaten Trigg 10 of the previous 13 meetings, although Trigg County still leads the all-time series 102-54.

More importantly, Trigg County begins its district slate with a road win ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Lyon County and a home date with Livingston Central next Friday.

Crittenden County is in a 0-2 district hole with a game next Friday against Lyon County.
