Coaches John Calipari of Kentucky and Hubert Davis of North Carolina recruit a lot of the same players and see the same players play at numerous showcase events across the country.
That makes both coaches a bit more familiar with players they will be facing in tonight’s matchup in Atlanta and also makes the game even more fun for players.
“I think it is fun when you get to compete against guys who are known,” Davis said about Saturday’s game. “Anytime you get a chance to play against Kentucky and coach Calipari it is something to enjoy and have fun competing.
“Atlanta will be packed and the atmosphere will be live and that’s what you want as a player and competitor.”
Davis would be open to a home-and-home series with Kentucky.
“Yeah. I would. I mean, I would. Yes,” Davis said when asked about a series.
The Tar Heels have faced a daunting schedule. They have wins over Arkansas, Tennessee and Florida State already and the two losses have been to Villanova and Connecticut. They will face No. 11 Oklahoma next week after playing No. 14 Kentucky today.
“I like it,” Davis said about the tough schedule. “I do think it is a great schedule. I think it is important for us to be tested and find out who we are. I do not remember a time where it was not a challenging schedule for North Carolina and specifically for me as a head coach. Every year North Carolina has always played a challenging schedule and we always will.”
