Wearing white uniforms for the first time this season, the Trigg County Wildcats used a quick start and then held on for a 60-57 district win at Wildcat Gym.

Trigg began the season with five road games, winning just one.

On Friday, the Wildcats used its press defense to force 10 first quarter turnovers. Trigg scored the first 13 points and led by as many as 15 points.

Down 15-2, things went from bad to worse for Livingston when leading scorer Logan Wring picked up his third foul. That sent 28 points and 15 rebounds a game to the bench.

Enter Zion Meyers who sparked a 16-3 run with nine points and got the Cardinals back to within 20-18 midway through the second quarter.

With Wring on the bench, Jhaden Vaughn took advantage for the Wildcats and scored all 14 of Trigg’s points to help boost the halftime advantage to 34-24.

Landon Stewart hit a 3-pointer to give Trigg a 39-26 lead a minute into the third quarter but it was the last double-digit lead for the Wildcats as Livingston used a 10-2 run to get to within five points.

The Cardinals slowly chipped away at the Wildcat lead in the fourth quarter as the lead fluctuated between four and eight points.

Wring’s bucket with 10 seconds left got Livingston to 58-56. Trigg made one of two free throws with eight seconds left.

Up three, Trigg fouled Meyers before Livingston could get off a game-tying 3-pointer. Meyers hit the first free throw and missed the second on purpose but couldn’t get the rebound.

Stewart hit one of two free throws with four seconds left for the final margin.

Free throw shooting was almost the downfall of the Wildcats. They hit 14 of 30 for the game and just 7 of 18 in the second half.

That was offset by 22 Livingston turnovers that led to 27 Wildcat points.

Livingston outrebounded Trigg 33-21 and held a 36-32 advantage in the paint.

Vaughn led the Wildcats with 21 points and five rebounds. Joshaun Bridges came off the bench to score 13 points and add five steals.

Meyers finished with 20 points for the Cardinals. Reese Davidson added 15 points and Wring scored six points and pulled down 14 rebounds – mostly in the second half.

Trigg County has won nine straight against Livingston and 19 of the last 24 matchups.

The win moves Trigg County to 2-1 in district play and sole possession of second place in the standings.
