Caldwell’s Girls Fall to Mayfield 52-39

Lay Mayes scored 13 of her game-high 26 points in the second quarter as Mayfield took control of Monday’s makeup date at Caldwell County.

With the game tied 8-8 late in the first quarter, the visiting Lady Cardinals went on a 14-0 run and went on to win the contest 52-39 at the Community Activities Building gym in Princeton.

Caldwell, now 1-5, led only briefly early in the contest at 4-0 and 6-5 before Mayfield seized the upper hand.

The Lady Cardinals outscored Caldwell 37-15 over the middle two stanzas.

It was 27-14 at halftime and 46-23 entering the final period.

Mayfield (5-1) led by as much as 25 points in the fourth quarter.

Skylar Mandry had nine points and eight rebounds while Keely Henson also scored nine points for Mayfield. Mayes pulled down nine boards.

Tink Clark scored 11 points to lead Caldwell. KeDarriah Thompson had seven points and seven rebounds while Jakhia Copeland also scored seven points.

The game was originally scheduled for the first week of the season, but was postponed because Mayfield’s football team was playing in the state championship game the next day.

The Lady Tigers will next play two games in the West Kentucky Hoops Classic on Thursday and Friday at the CAB. Caldwell’s girls will play Logan County on the first day of the event before facing Rowan County on the final day.
