With injury and illness putting a major dent in their roster on Wednesday at the FNB Bank Holiday Classic at Marshall County, the Christian County Colonels started slow and never caught up in a 63-44 loss to Douglass, GA.
Playing without two of their top-three scorers, the Colonels found points hard to come by in the first quarter. Douglass led 18-0 behind seven points from Jacob Mickell and five for Noah Treadwell before Christian County got its only bucket of the first quarter on Derrell Bateman’s three-pointer.
Josh Mickell tossed in seven points in the second for the Astros, and they led 32-11 at the halftime break.
Bateman put the Colonels on his back with 16 of the team’s 20 points in the third to help them outscore Douglass 20-14. Treadwell and Jacob Mickell combined for ten for the Astros, and they held a 15-point advantage with a quarter to play.
Christian County twice cut the margin to 11 in the fourth quarter but couldn’t get it to single digits. Bateman’s steal and dunk trimmed it to 51-40 with just under five minutes left before Douglass closed the game on a 12-4 spurt.
The Colonels slipped to 3-5 and will return on Thursday to face Huntingdon, TN after the Mustangs lost to hosts Marshall County on Wednesday.
