If the Lyon County Lyons go on to win a state title or even make a deep run at Rupp in March, they may be able to turn to December 9th as a key date in their season. That day was the one when the Lyons traveled to Columbia, Missouri, and got manhandled by Father Tolton 71-54. Since that time, the Lyons have owned the court.

Whether it was a matter of refocusing or just a bad day in Missouri, the Lyons have been a completely different team, playing on a completely different level since that day.

Friday, the Lyons sent another loud and clear message back to the Bluegrass State by doing a little manhandling of their own in a 93-62 win over Buckhorn, the defending Class 6A champion in the state of Alabama. With the win, the Lyons claimed the Signature Bracket Small Town Series Championship of the City of Palms Classic, in Fort Myers.

This one was not close for very long. The Lyons came out firing, knocking down 69.2 percent of their shots in the opening quarter, including 4 of 6 from behind the arc. The Lyon County lead would be 25-17 after the first eight minutes.

And just about the time that Buckhorn thought it could not get any worse for them, it did. The Lyons heated up even more in the second quarter hitting 71.4 percent from the field and 3 of 4 from behind the 3-point line. Meanwhile, on the defensive end of the court, the Lyons limited Buckhorn to less than 37 percent shooting in both the first quarter and the second quarter as the halftime scoreboard showed Lyon County up 51-28.

The Lyon County shooting cooled off to a ‘paltry’ (cough, cough) 55.8 percent in the third quarter, but the defense was still in lockdown mode. The Lyons outscored Buckhorn 26-13 to make it 77-41 and it was just a matter of playing out the final 8 minutes of the game to determine the final score.

Travis Perry put on a show for those hanging out in Florida on Friday. Perry hit for 40 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. The other two members of ‘The Three Amigos’ also did their things. Brady Shoulders had 21 points, seven assists, and five rebounds. Jack Reddick finished with a triple-double at 11 points, 13 assists, and 10 rebounds.

Caleb Holt was the only player for Buckhorn to reach double figures as he ended the game with 30 points.

Lyon County (8-1) now gets to celebrate Christmas before heading off next week to Lexington Catholic for the annual White, Greer, and Maggard Holiday Classic.

  1. Goes for 40. Perry may be better than Reed Sheppard. Be great to see them on the court together. Big game tomorrow at 9pm Cooper Flagg & Derik Queen take on Edgecomb and Co. This is played in a brand new Arena. Great venue. Once Edison Community College now Florida Southwestern Div IIa school. Rick Pitino recruited here when he was with UK
