Webster County Continues Recent Dominance of Trigg

Trigg County’s second half rally fell short against Webster County with the Trojans advancing to the Class 2A sectional championship following Thursday’s 68-58 win on Thursday at Wildcat Gym.

Webster County will play Paducah Tilghman in Friday’s championship game. The Blue Tornado beat Union County 68-61 in the other semifinal.

Webster County hit 6 of 10 three-pointers in the first half and built a 22-point first half lead.

Down 24-4 out of the gate and trailing by as many as 22 points, the Wildcats began attacking the basket out of the locker room at halftime. Trigg hit 9 of 13 shots in the third quarter and got to within 51-44.

Trigg was able to get to the free throw line in the fourth quarter and cut the Trojan lead to 58-54 with 3:50 left.

However, Trigg managed just one field goal the rest of the way and DeShawn Murphy sparked a 9-2 run with six of his 14 points.

Trigg County shot 50 percent from the field but 18 turnovers saw the Trojans get up 13 more shots than Trigg and score 20 points off the mistakes.

After their hot start from the outside, Webster cooled off in the second half and missed six of its seven shots from behind the 3-point line.

Jhaden Vaughn scored 23 points, including his 1,500th career point, and pulled down 12 rebounds. Jerimyah Shearer added 12 points, and Davaree Gude chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds.

Webster County put four players in double figures led by Luke Garrard’s 16 points.

Webster County leads the all-time series with Trigg 26-11 and has won five straight and nine of the last 10 meetings.

Trigg County returns to the court on Tuesday at Hopkins County Central.
